Prepared by Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and PLMJ, the white paper describes Portugal as a welcoming hub for large international technology companies and hyperscalers.
Portugal has an unrivalled location for data centres committing to best practices in data protection rules and is one of the most stable, open and business-friendly countries in the European Union (EU) in terms of innovation, digitalisation and technical expertise.
“Portugal adheres to best practices in the law and regulation of data protection, yet at the same time it is consistently ranked as one of the most business-friendly, stable and open jurisdictions in the EU. Publicly recognised for fostering innovation, Portugal has taken concrete steps to embrace the digital transformation and encourage technological investment,” says the white paper.
Similarly, Portugal does not impose any additional restrictions on the use of cookies and e-marketing beyond those set at EU level under the e-Privacy Directive. In addition, Portuguese data protection and cybersecurity regulators have supported and collaborated with private stakeholders, including hyperscalers, the paper concludes.
The white paper entitled “Embracing the Challenges of Digital Transformation” argues that Portugal is well positioned not only to keep up with digital transformation, but also to continue its journey as one of Europe’s pioneers in technological innovation.
Portugal also already benefited from other geographical and technological advantages, such as a growing network of fibre-optic cables, which positions it as a European gateway to Africa, the Americas and other destinations.
